Subject
An elephant walking forward with its trunk dramatically raised above its head.
The animal is carved from the pale upper layer of the shell, while the warm orange-brown layer beneath becomes the background — the contrast is entirely natural, with no added colour.
The large ear, curved trunk, tusks, legs and gently rounded body are individually modelled, so the figure reads as a miniature animal sculpture rather than a surface image.
The Story
Across cultures the elephant stands for strength, wisdom, endurance, memory and good fortune — yet the strength of an elephant is rarely expressed through aggression. It is calm, measured and confident.
Grzegorz Kiernicki's elephant captures precisely that character. The animal moves forward while its trunk rises above its head, a gesture traditionally associated with optimism and good fortune.
The shell reinforces the idea. From an ordinary natural material, a brilliant white animal emerges against an earth-toned ground. What was once hidden inside the shell becomes the subject of the artwork.
The cameo is surrounded by a thin silver bezel and then set within a much broader, darkened silver frame. The intentionally subdued outer metal contrasts with the warm shell and brilliant white elephant, and its irregular handcrafted texture keeps the silver from competing with the carving.
A substantial integrated silver bail at the top turns the work into a wearable pendant. The reverse leaves a large portion of the shell exposed, revealing its naturally warm colour and curvature.
The Elephant of Strength is a small sculpture about moving forward with confidence — powerful enough to endure, yet gentle enough not to need to prove its strength.
The piece weighs 12 grams and measures 4.4 cm wide, 3.5 cm tall and 0.7 cm thick.
Handcrafted by the Artist
This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.
- —The elephant is carved entirely by hand by Grzegorz Kiernicki.
- —Traditional cameo carving is adapted to a subject far beyond the classical profile portrait.
- —The naturally contrasting layers of the sea shell are used rather than added colour.
- —Material was removed around the animal while preserving enough pale shell to form the body, trunk, tusks and raised details.
- —The relief physically projects from the background, as the side view reveals.
- —The silver bezel and broad darkened frame were formed specifically around the finished carving.
- —The bail is integrated into the handmade silver structure.
- —The natural shell remains largely exposed on the reverse.
- —Carving, sculpture and silversmithing are brought together in a single handmade object.
- —The piece is one-of-a-kind and made entirely by the artist in Vancouver, British Columbia.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki
Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.
Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
