Subject

A stylized human face emerges from the pale portion of the shell, its features modelled directly into the naturally layered surface.

Sweeping areas of peach, cream, brown and violet-grey move across the opposite side of the composition, so the natural coloration of the shell becomes part of the image rather than a background to it.

The Story

“The Guardian” is an expressive hand-carved sea-shell pendant created by Grzegorz Kiernicki, combining portrait carving, natural shell coloration and individually worked silver.

A stylized human face emerges from the pale portion of the shell, with the features modelled directly into its naturally layered surface.

The face is not isolated from the material around it. Instead, sweeping areas of peach, cream, brown and violet-grey move across the opposite side of the composition, allowing the shell’s natural coloration to become part of the image.

Grzegorz worked with these existing variations rather than concealing them.

The result creates an intriguing relationship between the carved portrait and the untouched character of the natural material.

The pendant is enclosed by a handmade silver setting with a textured surface visible around the perimeter and reverse.

At the bottom, a separate curved silver element extends beneath the cameo and supports a suspended dark spherical bead or pearl. This additional element introduces movement to an otherwise solid sculptural form and gives the pendant a distinctive silhouette.

Viewed from the side, the depth of the shell becomes apparent, as does the layered construction of the silver framework and suspended ornament.

The reverse is deliberately restrained. The softly coloured natural shell remains visible, surrounded by the textured silver structure.

“The Guardian” reflects Grzegorz Kiernicki’s practice of treating jewellery as an individual work of art — allowing carving, natural material and handmade metalwork to develop together as a single composition.

Handcrafted by the Artist

This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.

  • The human face is sculpted directly into the shell by hand.
  • The naturally occurring coloration of the shell is used as part of the composition.
  • Warm cream, peach and brown tonal variations run through the material.
  • Darker natural shell layers are integrated into the image rather than removed.
  • The relationship between portrait and untouched natural material is deliberately asymmetrical.
  • The silver setting is made by hand and formed to this single piece.
  • The silver surface is textured rather than uniformly polished.
  • A separate curved silver element extends beneath the cameo.
  • A dark bead or pearl is suspended from that lower element.
  • Seen from the side, the construction reads as fully three-dimensional.
  • This is an individually created work rather than mass-produced jewellery.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki

Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.

Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
