The Story
“Serenity” is a deeply sculptural hand-carved sea-shell cameo created by Grzegorz Kiernicki.
A calm human face emerges directly from the softly coloured surface of the natural shell. The composition is remarkably restrained: there is no elaborate costume, decorative border or traditional profile portrait competing for attention. Instead, the face itself becomes the entire subject.
The closed or softly defined eyes, gently formed nose and subtly smiling lips give the portrait a peaceful, almost meditative presence.
Grzegorz used the natural cream, pale yellow, lavender-grey and soft pink tones of the shell as part of the composition. Rather than applying colour, the variations belong to the material itself and move naturally across the sculpted face.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of this piece is its depth. At approximately 2 cm thick, the face projects substantially from the surrounding setting. Viewed from below or from the side, the nose, lips, cheeks and forehead reveal the three-dimensional nature of the carving.
This makes “Serenity” as much a miniature sculpture as a piece of jewellery.
The cameo is enclosed within a substantial handmade silver setting. The sides of the metalwork have a deliberately worked and textured surface, creating a strong contrast with the smooth, softly polished shell.
The reverse is intentionally simple, allowing the natural shell to remain visible within the handmade silver structure.
“Serenity” reflects Grzegorz Kiernicki’s approach to jewellery as an artistic medium — combining natural material, carving and individually fabricated metalwork to create a one-of-a-kind object by hand.
Handcrafted by the Artist
This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.
- —The human face is deeply sculpted, carved as relief rather than incised into a flat surface.
- —The piece carries an unusually substantial overall thickness of approximately 2 cm.
- —The nose and lips are modelled fully in three dimensions and project from the shell field.
- —The expression is calm and minimalist, with no decorative additions around the portrait.
- —The natural colour transitions of the sea shell — cream, pale yellow, lavender-grey and soft pink — move across the carved face.
- —The smooth polished carving is set against deliberately textured silverwork.
- —The silver surround is formed and finished entirely by hand.
- —The pendant bail is individually fabricated for this single piece.
- —The low-angle view reveals the sculptural profile and the true depth of the carving.
- —The work sits between jewellery and miniature sculpture — an individual artist-made object, not a commercially manufactured cameo.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki
Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.
Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
