The Story
“The Dreamer” is a quietly expressive hand-carved cameo created by Grzegorz Kiernicki from natural sea shell.
At the centre of the piece, a youthful face appears almost to emerge from within the shell itself. Rather than relying on a strongly raised traditional cameo profile, Grzegorz used extremely subtle carving and the shell’s natural tonal layers to reveal the portrait.
Fine engraved lines define the hair, eyes, nose, lips and surrounding texture, while the pale central figure contrasts against the shell’s naturally darker violet-grey field.
The result changes character with the light. From some angles the portrait appears soft and almost hidden; from others, the delicate carving becomes increasingly visible.
The reverse tells another part of the story. Instead of concealing the material from which the artwork was made, the back preserves the naturally spotted brown, cream and white exterior of the sea shell.
The shell is surrounded by a substantial handcrafted silver setting with an intentionally textured, sculptural surface.
Together, the natural shell, delicate portrait and rugged silverwork transform the piece into something between jewellery and miniature sculpture — a one-of-a-kind work reflecting Grzegorz Kiernicki’s lifelong practice of creating directly by hand.
Handcrafted by the Artist
This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.
- —The portrait is carved with extreme subtlety, worked only as deeply as the shell layer allows.
- —The hair is treated with fine engraved linework rather than modelled relief.
- —The shell’s pale inner layer forms the face, using the material’s own tonal change instead of applied contrast.
- —The natural violet-grey colouring of the shell surrounds the portrait as its field.
- —Delicate carving is set against heavily textured silverwork, a deliberate contrast of touch.
- —The naturally spotted exterior of the sea shell remains visible on the reverse.
- —The substantial silver surround is formed and finished by hand.
- —Seen from the side, the piece has genuine three-dimensional construction and raised oval form.
- —This is an individual artist-made object, not mass-produced jewellery — carved and mounted by Grzegorz Kiernicki himself.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki
Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.
Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
