Subject

An eagle is shown frontally with both wings fully raised and extended outward, creating a strong, symmetrical, almost heraldic composition.

The bird has been carved from the pale upper layer of the natural shell, allowing the warm peach-brown layer beneath to form a contrasting background — colour created by revealing the material rather than by adding pigment.

Individual feather details run throughout the wings and body, with a defined head and beak, sculpted breast and lower tail feathering. The eagle stands above a small sculptural base that gives the central figure additional dimensionality.

The carving is surrounded by a substantial handcrafted silver frame with a darkened, textured finish, and a simple integrated silver bail allows the piece to be worn as a pendant.

The Story

From the natural layers of a piece of shell, Grzegorz Kiernicki carved one of art's most enduring symbols. An eagle rises from the surface with its wings extended.

The pale upper layer of shell becomes the bird. The darker layer beneath becomes the sky-like background. Instead of adding colour, the composition is created by revealing what already exists within the material.

For centuries the eagle has stood for strength, courage, freedom, authority and independence. Rather than showing the bird in profile, Grzegorz presents it directly from the front, wings spread across the shell, so the white silhouette reads dramatically against the warm natural tone.

The result is both jewellery and miniature sculpture — a one-of-one object created entirely by hand. One artist. One original. One of one.

Handcrafted by the Artist

This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.

  • —Traditional cameo technique: the design is worked through naturally contrasting layers of a single piece of shell.
  • —Fully spread wings with individually articulated feathers.
  • —Sculpted body and breast, with a defined head and beak.
  • —Tail and lower feather detail carved in relief.
  • —Raised sculptural base lifting the eagle physically above the background rather than engraving it into the surface — clearest in the low-angle photograph.
  • —Symmetrical, heraldic composition built around the natural two-tone shell contrast.
  • —Wide hand-fabricated silver frame made specifically for this carving, giving a compact cameo substantial visual presence.
  • —Carving and metalwork form one unified artwork — hand-carved, hand-mounted, artist-made, one of one.

Material & Silverwork Details

  • —Carving material: natural shell, with a pale upper layer forming the eagle and a warm peach-brown underlayer forming the background.
  • —Metal: silver — a wide handcrafted frame with an intentionally textured and darkened surface that contrasts with the pale carving.
  • —Bail: a simple integrated silver bail allows the work to be worn as a pendant.
  • —Reverse: shows the natural shell construction and the handcrafted silver mounting, with irregular handmade tool texture left visible.
  • —The handmade irregularities of the metalwork have deliberately not been smoothed; they show the setting was individually fabricated rather than commercially manufactured.
  • —Disciplines represented: traditional shell cameo carving, relief sculpture, natural shell colour layering, figurative animal carving, hand-fabricated silverwork and jewellery design.
  • —Provenance: from the lifetime collection of Grzegorz Kiernicki — jeweller, painter, sculptor and artist. He personally designed, carved and mounted this piece, so carving and setting should be presented together as one original artwork.
  • —No date of manufacture, shell species, silver purity or historical attribution is claimed pending independent confirmation.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki

Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.

Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
