Subject
The central figure is an angel shown in prayer. The head is bowed and the hands are raised toward the face, creating a peaceful, contemplative expression of devotion.
A large wing rises alongside the figure and projects substantially outward from the shell. The body, wing and surrounding shell have been carved at different depths, producing a composition that changes noticeably depending upon the viewing angle.
From the front, the angel dominates the composition. From the side, the extraordinary depth of the carving becomes apparent.
The result is not simply an image engraved into shell. It is a miniature figure emerging from the material itself.
The Story
A small piece of natural shell becomes a moment of quiet devotion. Grzegorz Kiernicki carved the angel deeply into the material, allowing the figure to emerge far beyond the traditional surface of a cameo.
The angel bows in prayer. Her hands rise toward her face while a powerful wing curves beside her. The natural brown markings of the shell remain visible alongside the pale figure, preserving a reminder of the material from which the sculpture was created.
Viewed from directly ahead, the angel appears almost contained within the shell. Turn the pendant sideways and its true sculptural character is revealed: the wing projects outward, the body gains volume, and the layers of carving become visible.
This relationship between the natural shell and the figure carved from it gives Angel in Prayer its distinctive character. It is simultaneously jewellery, shell carving and miniature sculpture.
Handcrafted by the Artist
This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.
- —High-relief shell sculpture rather than a shallow conventional cameo — the figure projects dramatically outward from the surface of the shell.
- —Exceptional sculptural depth: approximately 7/8 inch thick for an object standing only 1 1/2 inches tall.
- —The bowed head and raised hands were modelled at close range, giving the devotional pose its intimacy.
- —The prominent wing was carved to rise and project beside the figure, carrying the composition well beyond the plane of the shell.
- —Body, wing and surrounding shell were carved at different depths so the composition reads differently from every viewing angle.
- —The natural structure and coloration of the shell were used as part of the composition rather than concealed.
- —The silver framework and broad bail were fabricated by hand specifically for this individual carving.
- —Carving and metalwork form one unified artwork — hand-carved, handcrafted, artist-made, one of one.

Deeply hand-carved natural sea shell mounted in a handcrafted silver setting. Designed, carved and mounted entirely by Grzegorz Kiernicki in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Material & Silverwork Details
- —Carving material: natural sea shell, retaining ivory and cream tones that transition into distinctive warm brown markings along the side of the piece.
- —Natural variation: the markings emphasise the organic origin of the material; no second shell would possess precisely the same shape, thickness or coloration.
- —Metal: silver — a substantial handmade framework surrounding the shell, visible across the reverse.
- —Bail: a broad handcrafted silver bail at the top allows the sculpture to be worn as a pendant.
- —Reverse: simple geometric handmade construction, a deliberate contrast to the organic, highly dimensional carving on the front.
- —Disciplines represented: figurative sculpture, high-relief shell carving, jewellery design, hand fabrication, silversmithing and natural-material composition.
- —Provenance: from the lifetime collection of Grzegorz Kiernicki — jeweller, painter, sculptor and artist. The shell carving and silver setting were created as a single artistic composition. One artist. One shell. One original work.
- —No date of manufacture, shell species, silver purity or religious attribution beyond the visible praying angel is claimed pending independent confirmation.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki
Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.
Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
