Subject
A serene female figure emerges dramatically from the natural layers of the shell. Unlike the traditional profile portraits commonly associated with cameo carving, Grzegorz presents the woman directly from the front, her face projecting prominently from the material with carefully modelled brow, eyes, nose and softly defined lips.
Her elongated neck and shoulders descend toward the lower portion of the composition, giving the portrait an elegant sculptural quality.
Behind the woman’s head are two broad areas of intricate repeated carving. These textured forms frame the face and can be read as stylized hair, an elaborate ceremonial headdress, or even wing-like forms — an ambiguity that gives the figure a mysterious and timeless presence.
At the base of the composition sits a striking pear-shaped faceted ruby, the only intense colour within an otherwise restrained palette of ivory shell and silver.
The Story
She does not pose like a traditional portrait. She seems instead to emerge quietly from the shell. Her expression is calm and introspective, her eyes lowered, while the carved forms surrounding her head create an almost ceremonial presence.
And beneath her rests a single deep-red ruby. The contrast is deliberate and powerful. The woman is rendered almost entirely in soft ivory tones; the silver surrounding her is subdued and organic. Then, at the centre of the composition, there is colour. A single ruby — like a heartbeat beneath the sculpture.
The piece can be interpreted as a portrait of inspiration itself: quiet on the surface, yet carrying something intense within. That idea inspired its name — The Ruby Muse. A muse does not create the artwork. She inspires its creation.
For an artist who spent a lifetime moving between painting, sculpture, jewellery and carving, inspiration could come from a face, a material, a colour, or simply the possibilities hidden inside an ordinary piece of shell. Here, Grzegorz allowed those possibilities to become a woman emerging from the material itself.
The ruby becomes her emotional centre — a small point of intensity surrounded by quiet ivory. The Ruby Muse is a miniature work celebrating beauty, inspiration, inner strength and the creative spark hidden beneath the surface.
Handcrafted by the Artist
This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.
- —The frontal orientation makes this cameo particularly unusual: traditional shell cameos rely upon the strong silhouette of a profile, while Grzegorz approached this work almost as a miniature sculpture.
- —Facial volume was carved directly toward the viewer, the features gradually rising from the surrounding shell rather than reading as a flat image.
- —The textured areas surrounding her head required repeated carving into the shell, producing a visual contrast between the smooth face and the intricate surfaces around it.
- —The side view reveals the depth of the relief and how substantially the figure projects from the shell — a dimensional quality characteristic of Grzegorz Kiernicki’s work.
- —The pear-shaped ruby was incorporated into the composition rather than attached as decoration, individually surrounded by silver and built into the handmade lower structure of the pendant.
- —The silver framework was individually fabricated around the completed shell rather than adapted from a commercial mounting.
- —Several disciplines meet in one object: traditional shell carving, high-relief miniature sculpture, portraiture, gemstone setting, hand fabrication, silversmithing and jewellery design.
- —The result is wearable miniature sculpture and artist-made jewellery — hand-carved, handcrafted, artist-made, one of one.

Natural sea shell with a pear-shaped faceted ruby, mounted within a custom handcrafted silver setting. Hand-carved and constructed entirely by Grzegorz Kiernicki in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Material & Silverwork Details
- —Carving material: natural sea shell, its own colour layers used to separate the pale face from the warmer surrounding textures.
- —Gemstone: pear-shaped faceted ruby, deep crimson-red, bezel-set in silver directly beneath the figure’s chest as the emotional centre of the composition.
- —Metal: silver — a custom framework constructed around the individual shape of this shell rather than a commercially manufactured mounting.
- —Lower structure: hand-worked sculptural silver surrounds the ruby and extends organically beneath the carving, its rugged surface contrasting the smooth shell. Small silver elements rise along the lower sides, securing and visually framing the composition.
- —Bail: a broad handcrafted silver bail at the top with visible surface texture.
- —Reverse: left largely open so the natural shell remains visible, clearly displaying the handmade construction.
- —Artist’s mark: the reverse of the shell carries an apparent hand-inscribed “GK” monogram for Grzegorz Kiernicki. The silver bail also appears to carry a small stamped or engraved marking; that secondary mark is not interpreted here pending independent confirmation.
- —Provenance: from the lifetime collection of Grzegorz Kiernicki — jeweller, painter, sculptor and artist. Because every natural shell differs in colour layering, thickness and curvature, an exact duplicate cannot be produced. One artist. One shell. One unique work.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki
Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.
Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
