Subject

Jesus Christ at the Crucifixion, carved as a three-dimensional figure and suspended against an intensely iridescent natural shell background.

This piece moves beyond the traditional definition of a cameo. Rather than carving a conventional relief portrait from a flat shell surface, Grzegorz created Christ as a pronounced sculptural figure projecting outward from the pendant.

The pale figure contrasts dramatically with the extraordinary natural colours of the shell behind it. Depending on the angle of light, the background shifts through green, turquoise, blue, violet, gold and pink, producing an almost luminous quality around the figure of Christ.

Surrounding everything is a substantial, deliberately rugged silver structure. At 53 grams and approximately 3 cm thick, this is not a delicate conventional cameo pendant — it has the physical presence of a miniature sculpture.

Christ is represented frontally with both arms extended outward in the familiar form of the Crucifixion. The body has been carved as a continuous elongated sculptural form: the torso projects substantially from the background, while the arms extend across the upper portion of the composition.

Small areas of the shell's natural darker colouring remain visible toward the wrists, creating unexpected variation within the otherwise pale figure. Rather than overwhelming the composition with minute anatomical detail, Grzegorz allows the unmistakable silhouette of Christ to carry the image.

The Story

Few images in Western art carry the emotional weight of the Crucifixion. It represents suffering and sacrifice — but the Christian story does not end there. Beyond the darkness comes resurrection. Beyond suffering comes hope.

Grzegorz's choice of material creates an extraordinary visual expression of that idea. Christ appears pale and still at the centre of the composition. Behind Him, however, the shell seems alive with colour.

Light moves across its surface. Blue becomes green. Gold appears. Violet emerges. The colours disappear and return as the piece moves. The rough, darkened silver surrounding the scene makes that light appear even stronger.

Whether viewed primarily as an expression of faith or simply as a work of symbolic art, the contrast is powerful: darkness surrounding light, suffering surrounded by beauty, and stillness surrounded by changing colour.

The natural shell existed long before Grzegorz began carving it. By recognizing what its extraordinary iridescence could contribute to the subject, he transformed the material into part of the story itself.

The Crucifixion is a work about sacrifice, faith, suffering and ultimately hope. The piece weighs 53 grams and measures 2¾ inches tall, 2 inches wide and approximately 3 cm thick.

Handcrafted by the Artist

This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.

  • —Cameo #12 is particularly important within the collection because it demonstrates how far Grzegorz Kiernicki was willing to move beyond conventional cameo traditions.
  • —This is simultaneously shell carving, religious art, jewellery, metalwork and miniature sculpture.
  • —The figure projects dramatically from its background, carved as a continuous three-dimensional form rather than a flat relief.
  • —The naturally iridescent shell becomes an active visual component rather than simply the material upon which the image is carved.
  • —The heavy silver frame was then individually constructed around the composition, with its rough surface deliberately contrasting against the luminous nacre.
  • —At 53 grams, the finished piece has considerably more physical presence than many of the smaller cameos in the collection.
  • —Viewed from the front, side and reverse, the handmade nature of the construction is immediately apparent.
  • —Entirely designed, carved and constructed by Grzegorz Kiernicki in Vancouver, British Columbia — one artist, one piece, one-of-one.

Natural sea shell and iridescent mother-of-pearl with silver. The figure of Christ is carved as a three-dimensional form and mounted over a naturally nacreous shell panel; the surrounding setting is silver, worked entirely by hand.

Material & Silverwork Details

  • —Carving material: natural sea shell, with the figure of Christ carved from a pale area of the shell and small natural darker markings left visible toward the wrists.
  • —Background: naturally nacreous mother-of-pearl shell, retaining its untouched iridescent surface so that green, turquoise, blue, violet, gold and pink shift as the pendant moves under light.
  • —Metal: silver — an irregular, heavily worked frame rather than a smooth conventional jewellery bezel, its surface containing depressions, raised areas and visible tool marks.
  • —Reverse: almost completely enclosed by a broad silver plate carrying an extensive hammered texture, left clearly handmade rather than polished into mechanical uniformity.
  • —Bail: a large folded silver bail at the top reflects the substantial weight and sculptural character of the pendant.
  • —Markings: the reverse appears to carry hand-incised markings near the lower portion of the silver backing; these await a close macro photograph before a definitive transcription is recorded.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki

Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.

Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
