Subject
Adam and Eve beneath the Tree of Knowledge, each reaching upward toward its fruit.
Rather than presenting the biblical scene as a conventional flat cameo, Grzegorz uses the natural three-dimensional curvature of the shell to create an almost architectural miniature sculpture.
Adam and Eve appear on opposite sides of the central tree, their bodies carved in pale relief against areas of luminous natural mother-of-pearl. Above them spreads a richly textured canopy filled with individually defined fruit.
The central tree trunk divides the composition vertically, creating an almost perfectly balanced scene: two figures, two sides and one decisive moment shared between them.
The Story
Before the choice, there was the garden.
Adam and Eve lived surrounded by abundance, innocence and beauty. At its centre stood the Tree of Knowledge — and with it, the one boundary they were forbidden to cross.
Grzegorz captures the story at its most important moment. Not after the fall. Not after judgment. But at the moment of choice.
Adam and Eve sit on opposite sides of the tree, each reaching upward toward its fruit. Between them rises the trunk, dividing the composition almost like a boundary between innocence and knowledge. Above them, the branches are heavy with fruit.
The scene therefore becomes larger than the biblical story alone. It speaks about something deeply human: curiosity, temptation, free will and consequence.
Every life contains moments when a single decision separates what came before from everything that follows. In this tiny shell, Grzegorz has captured one of humanity's oldest stories about such a moment.
The Garden of Eden is a miniature sculpture about innocence, temptation and the power of choice.
The piece weighs 20.7 grams and measures 2½ inches tall, 1⅜ inches wide and approximately 2 cm thick.
Handcrafted by the Artist
This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.
- —This is one of the more distinctive pieces in the collection because Grzegorz did not simply carve an image onto a prepared oval shell — he used the natural architecture of the shell itself.
- —Adam and Eve are individually modelled in relief, with their faces, hair, arms, torsos and seated bodies emerging from the shell; both figures reach upward toward the fruit-bearing branches.
- —The tree becomes the structural centre of the composition: its long trunk rises between the figures before opening into a broad canopy extending across the curved upper surface.
- —Individual apples are represented by contrasting natural brown and cream areas surrounded by blue-green tones.
- —The shimmering mother-of-pearl visible behind the figures adds another natural colour and texture, so the curvature of the shell creates the enclosed feeling of a garden or sanctuary.
- —The composition required multiple levels of carving: the figures, central tree, fruit-filled canopy and surrounding surfaces all occupy different relief planes.
- —The result is considerably more dimensional than a traditional flat cameo.
- —Grzegorz then designed the silver framework around the completed shell, integrating metalwork and a bead accent into the finished composition.
- —It therefore crosses the boundary between cameo, jewellery, relief sculpture and miniature decorative art.
- —The piece is one-of-a-kind and made entirely by the artist in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Natural sea shell and silver, with a dark red-purple bead accent. The figures and tree are carved from the natural layers of the shell, with luminous mother-of-pearl left exposed behind them; the framework is silver, made by hand.
Material & Silverwork Details
- —Carving material: natural sea shell, retaining its white, blue-green, brown and iridescent mother-of-pearl tones.
- —Metal: silver — a custom framework constructed specifically around the unusual shape of the shell rather than a simple bezel.
- —Surface: the metal follows the contours of the shell and incorporates hand-worked and engraved textures, becoming part of the composition itself.
- —Bead accent: a deep red-purple bead is held at the base, where a curving silver element rises toward the central tree to form an additional sculptural feature beneath the scene.
- —Bail: a handmade silver bail at the top allows the object to be worn as a pendant despite its substantial sculptural depth.
- —Reverse: left largely open, revealing the natural nacre of the shell and emphasizing how much of the original organic material has been preserved.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki
Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.
Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
