Subject

A classical chariot scene, with horses surging forward while a charioteer controls the team from behind.

The foreground horse dominates the composition, its body carved prominently in high relief; behind it further forms suggest a second horse and the charioteer, giving the scene overlapping layers and a sense of depth and movement.

The warm peach-orange shell forms the background while the pale upper layer is preserved for the figures, so the natural two-tone structure of the shell becomes an essential part of the artwork.

The Story

There is something timeless about the image of horses pulling a chariot. It represents movement — but also control.

The horses possess tremendous strength, yet strength alone cannot determine their direction. Behind them stands the charioteer, guiding that power toward a destination.

Grzegorz captures the moment when everything seems to surge forward at once. The horse stretches across the shell. The charioteer reaches outward. The reins connect human intention with animal strength.

The composition becomes a metaphor for determination: power has greatest meaning when it has direction.

Carved from a material created slowly by the sea and transformed by hand decades later, the scene connects the ancient tradition of cameo carving with Grzegorz's own lifetime of craftsmanship.

The Chariot of Victory represents momentum, determination and the courage to keep moving forward.

The piece weighs 15 grams and measures 4.2 cm wide, 3.5 cm tall and 1 cm thick.

Handcrafted by the Artist

This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.

  • —Unlike a conventional cameo portrait, this composition attempts to capture an entire narrative within only a few centimetres of natural shell.
  • —It is a particularly ambitious composition because it contains multiple overlapping figures rather than a single isolated subject.
  • —The foreground horse is strongly modelled through its chest, body, legs and flowing forms.
  • —The charioteer's raised arm and reins create a diagonal movement across the upper portion of the cameo.
  • —Viewed from the side, portions of the horse project substantially above the background, demonstrating the sculptural nature of the work.
  • —A long sweeping element across the bottom visually anchors the composition and emphasizes the sensation of forward movement.
  • —The shell itself dictated how deeply each area could be carved: the pale upper layer was preserved where the figures were required, while surrounding material was removed to expose the contrasting warm background.
  • —The silver mount was then created individually around the completed carving.
  • —The finished object brings together cameo carving, miniature relief sculpture, composition, jewellery making and silversmithing in a single work.
  • —The piece is one-of-a-kind and made entirely by the artist in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Material & Silverwork Details

  • —Carving material: natural sea shell, with a pale upper layer and a warm peach-orange layer beneath.
  • —Metal: silver — a handcrafted bezel designed specifically for the irregular rounded shape of the shell.
  • —Outer edge: a deliberately textured surface, contrasting with the smooth polish of the shell.
  • —Bail: a substantial handmade bail rises directly from the upper frame so the artwork can be worn as a pendant.
  • —Reverse: the naturally curved shell is left exposed while the surrounding silver structure remains visible.
  • —Marking: the reverse appears to carry an engraved “GK” artist's mark together with what appears to be a date or further inscription; a dedicated close photograph of this inscription will be added to the archival record.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki

Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.

Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
