Subject

A highly stylized portrait carved directly into the natural shell, using the shell’s contrasting cream, peach, brown and white layers to create depth and visual movement.

The portrait appears framed by the naturally ribbed outer structure of the shell, which becomes part of the composition rather than simply surrounding it.

The Story

“Spirit of the Chief” is an expressive hand-carved cameo created by Grzegorz Kiernicki from a naturally layered shell.

Rather than forcing the material into a traditional oval cameo shape, Grzegorz allowed the natural contours, colouring and ribbed structure of the shell to become part of the artwork itself.

The sculpted face emerges gradually from the warm peach and cream layers of the shell, while the dramatic dark and white ridges create a powerful natural frame around the portrait.

The irregular shape, visible hand-carving and individually formed metal setting give the piece a distinctly one-of-a-kind character.

Like many works within the Grzegorz Collection, this piece sits somewhere between jewellery, sculpture and miniature art, reflecting Grzegorz Kiernicki’s lifelong approach of working directly with the character of natural materials rather than producing standardized designs.

Handcrafted by the Artist

This cameo was carved individually by Grzegorz Kiernicki and mounted by hand in his own workshop. Nothing about it is repeated: the material dictated the composition, and the setting was formed around the finished carving.

  • The shell’s natural layers are used for contrast, the carving following the cream, peach and brown strata rather than cutting across them.
  • The facial features are carved by hand, with the brow, cheek and mouth cut in graduated relief.
  • The shell’s natural ridges are integrated into the composition, forming a frame that belongs to the material itself.
  • The silhouette is deliberately asymmetrical, retaining the irregular outline of the shell as found.
  • The metal border is formed and fitted by hand to the individual contour of this single piece.
  • The work carries genuine sculptural thickness, closer to a miniature relief than a flat ornament.
  • This is an individual artist-made object, not mass-produced jewellery — carved and mounted by Grzegorz Kiernicki himself.

About Grzegorz Kiernicki

Grzegorz Kiernicki has spent a lifetime carving stone, shell, amber and antler by hand — first in Poland, later in Canada. He works without production moulds or repeated patterns, letting the grain, colour and flaws of each material decide the final form.

Every object in the Grzegorz Collection is a single, signed work made entirely by his own hands, and each one exists only once.
